Types Of Braid Hair Styles

Braids are one of the all time favorite hairstyles for ethnic cultures such as those with African descent. Hair braiding is an ancient and fine art that originally comes from Africa and has been especially perfected in West Africa. Here the types of braids that are worn depict status, age and the village they were from. Braids come in many different styles and patterns.

3 different types of braids:

1. Dread locks: These long “locks” have an ancient history and originally were merely twisted pieces of hair. Surprisingly your hair will form these natural twisted strands if they remain without being brushed for a certain length of time. Now these dread locks are more often braided strands of hair an can also be intertwined with colored beads. The beads are usually on the bottom of the braids. These long braids are popular with black men.

2. Goddess Braids: Goddess braids, as the name implies is an exotic complex form of braiding. It takes many hours to do and is usually reserved for shows and entertainment.

3. Cornrow braids: cornrow braids are those that are made very close to the scalp. They can be in straight lines (the traditional cornrow), or in intricate patterns and curves. These are the braids that are often seen in small children.

Braid hairstyle is a very social form of styling. It can take many hours to complete. Friends and relatives often do it in the home. In fact it used to be a tradition for small children to have their hair braided by mothers and grandmothers. In this way it was part of the bonding of mothers and daughters.
